I’ve had a variety of different mentors that guided me to where I am today and am so thankful for those people. However, I have also had some terrible mentors that have almost destroyed my outlook of my career throughout the journey that I continue to live today.
When we are wanting to create a portfolio, we want to be creating something that highlights not only your accomplishments but also your personality. This is hard to do. Early on in my early career, I dreamt of teaching at a University, but at the same time being able to pursue my creative pursuits freely. It had always been a type of juggling act in being able to share the world my interests in academia, but also my creative pursuits. Look at some things you will want to consider when creating a portfolio that highlights these seemingly opposite aspects of what it means to be a hybrid academic and artist.
There are so many possibilities available to us – one of those being DIY publishing. What’s great about this is if you know what you’re doing and if you’re willing to market your music through multiple digital platforms, you can get your music out there to the audience that you want. However, this takes a lot of time and patience for people to become familiar with your work.
