Kristine Dizon: Hello, my name is Kristine Dizon and I'm the CEO and founder of The Modern Artist Project. Today, I'm with Stanford Thompson, a musician and educator who serves as the founder and executive director of Play on Philly and founding board chair of El Sistema USA and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network. As a professional trumpeter, Stanford has performed as a soloist and member with major orchestras around the world and continues to perform throughout the Philadelphia region. Stanford is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, a graduate of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestras Talent Development Program, and holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the New England Conservatory Sistema fellows program. Thank you Stanford for joining us today.
Stanford Thompson: Thanks so much for having me. When we are wanting to create a portfolio, we want to be creating something that highlights not only your accomplishments but also your personality. This is hard to do. Early on in my early career, I dreamt of teaching at a University, but at the same time being able to pursue my creative pursuits freely. It had always been a type of juggling act in being able to share the world my interests in academia, but also my creative pursuits. Look at some things you will want to consider when creating a portfolio that highlights these seemingly opposite aspects of what it means to be a hybrid academic and artist.

Kristine Dizon: Hello! My name is Kristine Dizon, and I'm the CEO and Founder of the Modern Artist Project. Today, I'm with Dr. Sidney Shapiro, data analytics educator, manager of data sciences at Sofvie, and professor of Business Analytics at Cambrian College, who will be an incoming Assistant Professor of Business Analytics in the Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge. He teaches courses in programming and computer science. Thank you, Sidney, for joining us today! There are so many possibilities available to us – one of those being DIY publishing. What’s great about this is if you know what you’re doing and if you’re willing to market your music through multiple digital platforms, you can get your music out there to the audience that you want. However, this takes a lot of time and patience for people to become familiar with your work.

Kristine Dizon: Hello! My name is Kristine Dizon, and I'm the CEO and founder of the Modern Artist Project. Today, I'm with Juanita Calderon, who holds a B.A. in Modern Languages and is finishing her music education and choral conducting studies at Javeriana University. She has supported music organizations such as Wimbledon International Music Festival and Latin American Forum of Music Education as a community manager and content creator. She's currently the Communications and Artistic Projects Coordinator at Somos Capazes, a Colombian NGO dedicated to peacebuilding. She believes art and language are deeply rooted in human culture and is committed to transforming lives through music and education. Thank you, Juanita, for joining us today. Picture this: you’re fresh out of college and it’s time to begin your career as an artist, but you’re probably thinking, “What’s next?” Being a professional artist is not only about what you create but also how you market your creations.
If you’re struggling with how to begin this new chapter of your life, consider creating a business plan for yourself. It may sound intimidating, but it’s easier than you think! In short, a business plan is a method for defining your brand to your audience and outlining your career goals. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity. Kristine Dizon: Hello, my name is Kristine Dizon, and I'm the CEO and founder of the Modern Artist Project. Today, I'm with Margaret Gonzalez, a musician and educator from Venezuela. The founder of El Sistema, maestro Jose Antonio Abreu, believes in the transformative power of music and in making positive and lasting changes in the lives of our children. In 2020, when the pandemic hit, I was teaching part-time online so that way I would have enough money to buy the things that I needed for the clarinet as I was living in Paris at the time. After I found out that everything got canceled, I only had 500 Euros in my pocket before I had to act fast. I could have panicked and freaked out that despite having advanced degrees in music and the humanities, I was going to be b-r-o-k-e and h-o-m-e-l-e-s-s.
