GUEST ARTIST
Evangelos Saklaras began his musical journey as a self-taught electric guitarist and bass guitarist playing in several jazz and blues ensembles. Although initially interested in the priesthood, he interrupted his studies at the Ecclesiastical Academy in Athens in 2014 to immerse himself in classical double bass with Anastasios Kazaglis, one of the most prestigious double bass performers and teachers in Greece. In the summer of 2017, Evangelos joined the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra (SEYO) to give a performance with Joyce DiDonato at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a 2000 years old venue in Athens. After a successful audition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Evangelos was awarded a scholarship and is currently studying with Colin Paris, the Co-Principal Double Bass of the London Symphony Orchestra.
At the beginning of summer of 2018, as the principal double bass of the El Sistema Greek Youth Orchestra, he took part in Lullaby Project, a collaboration between Carnegie Hall and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in the Greek National Opera Hall, while later that summer he performed as principal double bass again with the SEYO major works under the batons of Sascha Goetzel, Jessica Cottis and Jesús Eduardo Uzcategui Vadcard, including the fourth movement of the Wynton Marsalis Violin Concerto with the extraordinary violinist and educator Nicola Benedetti. Performances took place at the Royal Festival Hall and the Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
At the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Evangelos has been involved in various projects collaborating with world-renowned artists such as Roberto González-Monjas, Gweneth-Ann Rand, Susan Bickley, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Derek Welton, Jeremy and John Lubbock and Derek Paravicini. He recently performed at the Deal Festival in a side-by-side project with the Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Joseph Crouch.
Evangelos lately shows great enthusiasm for baroque music and historical performance. At the same time he is a keen jazz performer and composer, with his most recent project being the recording of the (Im)Possibilities Ensemble’s first EP with original compositions.
Currently, apart from studying and freelancing, Evangelos is teaching stringed instruments at the Nucleo Project and is mastering the craft of bow rehairing and restoration.
