NANCY WILLIAMS Dr. Nancy Williams, a prominent musician and educator, has made significant contributions to the music industry through her extensive teaching career and active involvement as a performer. Her commitment to promoting new music and her groundbreaking research on woodwind improvisatory techniques have garnered her recognition in the field. With a comprehensive academic background and numerous published works, she continues to inspire and empower musicians worldwide.

Dr. Nancy Williams is a freelance musician, educator, and composer based out of Rapid City, SD, after receiving a DA in Clarinet Performance with a Musicology Secondary from the University of Northern Colorado. Additional degrees include a BME from South Dakota State University as a Briggs Scholar and MM from the University of Missouri – Columbia. A music educator for over twenty years, Williams has held faculty positions at Northwestern, Dordt, and Sioux Falls Colleges, and is currently the clarinet instructor at Chadron State College. In 2020, she added leadership coaching to her portfolio career.
Williams is an active soloist and chamber musician, performing most recently at ClarinetFest and as a headline artist at Carpe Clarinet Day. Williams is a founding member of the West Wind Quintet, Clarinet Madness Clarinet Choir, Clarinet Quartattitude, and Calumet Clarinet Duo. An advocate of new music, she has a history of commissioning and premiering original works, in addition to composing her own pieces. A multifaceted ensemble musician, she’s performed with various orchestras, including the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and San Diego Ballet. Additionally, her jazz saxophone résumé includes the Temptations and Four Tops.
Regularly presenting on her research on cadenzas, Eingänge, and ornamentation, she recently published a book on the subject, Woodwind Improvisatory Techniques of the Classical Era: A Pedagogy Method, to inspire and empower woodwind performers to incorporate improvisation into their Classical selections. Other current projects include performing the works of women composers and collaborating on British art song music, the topic of her dissertation History and Development of British Secular Song for Solo Voice and Clarinet. Williams is excited to be performing some of these pieces as a South Dakota Artist Fellowship Grant recipient.
